Tuesday, September 1, 2009

The last book i read was To Kill a Mockingbird. This book is a great classic, that i really enjoyed reading. This book is written by Harper Lee in the 1960's and it still relates to people today.

This book is a bout a young girl who goes through alot. Her father is fighting through a case where he is supporting a black man. Alot of people don't believe in this. The book teaches alot about life and how cruel people can be.

The Notebook

The book that i just recently read over summer vacation was The Notebook written by Nicholas Sparks, in 2004. The story begins as an old man in a nursery home is reading to a older woman and it goes back to when a young man named Noah Calhoun and a young woman named Allie Hamilton meet at a carnival and they fell in love the moment they seen one another. They only spent one summer together because Allie's father was working in the town. They spent every waking moment together until she had to leave, until many years later Allie see's an article in the newspaper about a house that Noah bought and is fixing up. So Allie decides she needs to go back to the town and tell Noah something that he needs to know, but what she doesnt know is that Noah is still and always will be madly in love with Allie.
I would reccommend this book to anyone who enjoys a true lasting love story. It also has a hint of mystery. It is also a page turner, 256 pages just isnt enough. i also enjoy many different types of books. i read just about anything and i am open to reading just about anything.

The last book i read

The last book i read was the duel, a factual book that compares the lives of Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. The book is written like a novel but is a biography, it tells the story of both men and how thir destinies crossed over and over again until the end were they fight to the death.

I really liked this book because it talks about historical facts in a nove like way which is more interesting than just a a simple biography book. The book is divided in two parts, in one it talks of alexanders' life and in the other one about Aarons' life. It compares parallel events on their lifes from each mans' point of view

Luna Bay: Pier Pressure

The last book I read was named Luna Bay: Pier Pressure. It was written by Francess Lin Lantz in 2003. This book is # 1 in the Roxy series. I picked this book because I love surfing and this book as well as the series revolves around that topic.

The story is about Luna and her friends trying to prepare for the intense upcoming surf competition during summer while working at a surf camp. Luna however is under more pressure for the competition in order to live up to her mother's legendary surfing status. This book is more a girlish book but it has to do with surfing. With that said I would recommend this book to girls or people who like stuff about surfing. I would prefer books like this because I'm interested in sporty based books.

Lord of The Flies

The last book i read independently read was The Giver. This book was written by Lois Lowry in 1993. I picked the book because it sounded like it would be a interesting book. The main plot was there is a secret civilization, and everyone in the society had a role. You were given your role and had no say about it. The main character in the story struggled to find the hidden things about the society and to escape from the village. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books about struggle adventure or if you just want a unique book. I am interested in reading a novel about baseball or sports in general.

The Mortal Instruments

The most recent books I have read is The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. This series contains three books: City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass. Clare was born overseas and spent her childhood traveling. From a young age she was reading fantasy books. City of Bones was first published in 2007 with the other two books to follow. I was reccomended this series by my mom.
Clary Fray's ordinary, mundane life was flipped upside down when she sees a murder at the Pandemonium Night Club. Clary's normal human life is now filled with demons, shadowhunters, vampires, and werewolves. Clary turns to the three suspicious teenagers at the club when her mother disappears. She questions her life when her sight comes in clear. These books are a fun, entertaining read. I would recommend this series to girls who are interested in fantasy books, they are similar to the Twlight series but with more action. I'm interested in any modern fiction book, but i usally look for fun, suspenseful books to read.

Heartland

The last book that I read was in the series Heartland book number 1. This series was written by Lauren Brooke and this book was published in 2000. I started reading this series in the sixth grade and then I moved up here and forgot that I was reading these books. When I went to the bookstore with my mom I found them and started over again.

The main plot is about a girl who lives on a horse farm with her family, and she finds a horse that needs caring. Her and her mother go to get this horse and some tragic things happen and she needs to find out what her next move needs to be, so that she can take care of this horse. I would recommend this book to people who like horses and those that care for animals. I myself am interested in all kinds of books. Mostly mysteries and fun types of series.

The Golden Compass

The last book I read was the Golden Compass. I read this in 9th grade, the author is Phillip Pullman written in 1996. It was a good book and, but I wouldnt recomend it to everyone. It is a fiction book about a girl with a magical compass and her adventure in a different world. I would only suggest this book to people with an imagination. This book has killing in it and if your not into magical things and unrealistic books then i wouldnt start it.

Anthem

The last book I read outside of school was Anthem by Ayn Rand. It's pretty much about this futuristic community where, no one has names and you are not any better than anyone else. You can't do anything independently, only as a group , you can't take the credit for anything, and if you did, you'd be punished. You were not allowed to love anyone. Although the main character "Equality 7-2521" stepped out of the box, loved who he wanted, overcame difficulties and became independent, broke away from the community and lived his life with the one who he wanted to love.

It's a pretty good book if you can just get over the first few chapters.
Last book i read was the lord of the flies. It was wrote by William Golding and it was written in 1954. Reason i pick this book was because we had to during english class in 10th grade. Main plot of the story was there were a bunch of kids trapped on a island after there plane crashed and all the parents died. They had no way of survival so they had to work together to live. But as they went on they started to split apart. Finally at the end they are saved.
I would recommend it because it was a good book. i would recommend it to someone that likes stuff of that nature. Types of novels that i like to read are sports related books. But other than that lord of the flies is a good book that should be read.

all quiet on the western front

the last book i read was all quiet on the western front. the book was written byErich Maria Remarque in 1929. i picked the book cause i was interested in world war fiction at the time. its about this man who is in a trench in the first world war and his day to day life. i would reconmend this book to anyone. it doesnt matter if you are into fiction or non piction you are going to love this book. its got alot of action and is very detailed so you get a great image of whats really happening in the book at the time. but if your not into people dieing and getting bombed then the book isnt for you. just dont even look at it then.

The first discussion on this forum is to discuss the last book you read on your own-not a forced march imposed on you by the forces of the English department. Who wrote it and when was it written? Why did you pick the book? What was the main plot?-Do not Rotten Tomato us! Would you recommend it and to whom would you recommend this book? Finally, what type of novel are you interested in reading? Your assignment is to answer these questions in two, well-written paragraphs and respond to one of your classmate's responses in one paragraph. Your responses may include book suggestions for your classmates or a request for more information about their book.

Let's Roll!

The last book i read was Let's Roll! by Lisa Beamer. It was written by the wife (Lisa Beamer) of a man who was on Flight 93. Her husband Todd was on his way to San Fransisco for a business meeting when four Islamic men hijacked their plane. Soon after a few passengers on the plane made calls to loved ones they found out about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Some passengers decided to take action and regain control of the aircraft. After a long struggle with the hijackers the plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
I chose to read this book because I like reading about the 9/11 attacks. This book was recommended to me by my step-dad. If someone was interested in the attacks like me then they should read this book. All in all this was a great book.

Born Blue

The last book I read on my own is called Born Blue, written by Han Nolan. This book is about a teen girl with a big dream to become a famous singer like Etta James. At an early age Leshaya was in revolving foster homes and a daughter of a heroin addict. Through her hardship she tries to find the courage and strength to break away from her past. During her journey to become a famous singer she struggles with many different obstacles.
I heard about this book through my sister who read it last year. I chose to read Born Blue because I felt like it reflected other people who may be going through the same obstacles or similar problems in their life. This was a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes books that are based on reality.

Ghost King

The last book that i actually chose to read myself was Ghost King. The author of this book is David Gemmell and he wrote it in 1988. The reason i read this book was because it appeals to my interests. If you enjoy a good Action/Adventure book, then i would reccomend this book to you.

The book is mainly about a prince who finds himself too weak to seize the throne. The boy prince and his father are invited to go hunting with fellow Lords. While his father and the Lords are off hunting, Thuro decides to stay at the Castle. The Lords return with no sign of Thuro's Father or his Kingsmen. The Prince Thuro is upset that his father has not returned, so he sets out to find his father himself. Later Thuro becomes lost in the woods and meets a girl who is very mysterious. After the long journey that the two take the prince is finally able to overcome resentful obsticles and finally man up enough to take his fathers place at the throne.

Straken

The most recent book I've read is the fantasy novel Straken. Straken was written by Terry Brooks and is the final book in the High Druid of Shannara trilogy. I chose to read this book because i had read the other two books in the series and thoroughly enjoyed them.
This book picks up where the previous book, Tanequil, left off, and focuses on the adventures of Pen Ohmsford and his companions, and his aunt Grainne Ohmsford. Grainne was a high druid, but due to a dark ritual she was transported to the Forbidden, which is a treacherous land filled with demons, and her only hope of escaping is her nephew Pen Ohmsford, who to make things more complicated, is being pursued by a mysterious group. Also a powerful shape shifting demon known as Moric escapes the Forbidden the take Grainne's place, and he wants to release all the demon from the Forbidden....to find out what happens next you will have to read the books! I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes the fantasy genre.

Lord of the Flies

The last book I read was Lord of the Flies. It was written by William Golding in 1954. I picked this book because I had to read it in eighth grade but didnt pay attention. I thought the parts I did hear sounded pretty good, so I read it again and enjoyed it.

This book was about a plane of British school boys who crashed on an uninhabited island. All the adults in the plane died, leaving all the children alone on the island. They tried to make rules and form a society. They had hunters, two boys watched the fire, and the rest gathered food and built things. They also elected a leader who called meetings and announced things. There were "littluns" who were the younger boys and then biguns who were the older boys. They try and survive with their rules until help comes which ends up being longer and harder than they thought.

The Fountainhead

The last book i read on my own was The Fountainhead. The author of the book is Ayn Rand. Ayn Rand was a Russian Immigrant. Some other popular books she has written are Atlas Shrugged, and The Anthem. The Fountainhead is a novel about a young architect, his violent battle against conventional standards and his explosive love affair with a beautiful women who struggles to defeat him. This book would be good for advanced readers not little kids. Also people who like philosophy and objectivism this book as well as other books she has written would be a good book for you to read. I really liked this book alot because you and others can relate it to your lives but not only that this book has different ways of thinking, meaning why would you want to throw something away you love? Usually people want to keep the things and people they love close to them. But this novel demonstrates other ways of thinking and is very interesting.
The last book I really read on my own was The Secret Lives of Men and Women: A PostSecret Book. This book is not a novel, it is a compilation of many different post cards. Frank Warren, the founder of PostSecret, put this book together. PostSecret is a blog where Frank posts all sorts of secrets. People mail in their secrets on postcards to him, so he receives quite a variety, making for an interesting blog and an interesting book.
I like reading all sorts of novels, I don't really have a certain type. I just have to look at a book and read about it to decide whether or not it sounds interesting enough to read. I would recommend the PostSecret book to anyone. I think a lot of people could find it interesting or relate to it in some way because so many different types of people send in secrets, so there's most likely going to be at least one secret in the book you would find interesting or relate to somehow.

Bottled Up

"Bottled Up" is a heart wrenching, man-against-himself novel by Jaye Murray about a boy named Pip suffering from a lack of parental guidance and a drug addiction. Pip's parents also suffer with their own addictions. Pip's Dad, Mike, is a terrible alcoholic; while his mother is addicted to anti-depressants. The instability in his household makes it hard for Pip and his little brother, Mikey. Pip's drug addiction is keeping him from progressing academically; therefore, Mr. Giraldi, the principal, thinks the best course of action is expulsion. Pip, on the other hand, doesn't think it's such a good idea. Mr. Giraldi gives Pip an ultimatum, if he seeks counseling Giraldi will give him a second chance. Throughout the book Pip struggles with overcoming addictions, taking care of Mikey, and trying to right all the wrongs in his life. Pip has to learn how to be responsible, and that drugs are not the way to escape his life. He does not want to go down the path of his father, and regardless of what anyone thinks, he knows he is better than he is. Though the struggle is hard, Pip knows he must push through for the sake of his little brother, his family, and himself.

"Bottled Up" was written by Jaye Murray, and published in 2003. I picked this book because it fit my interests, and seemed like a pretty interesting book to read. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding how people can overcome themselves, and their problems. It was a very good read, and taught many good life lessons. If I would have to classify the type of books I'm interested in, this would be it. I like to learn about how people feel about things, and how everyone needs someone to understand them.

Twilight

The last book I read on my own was Twilight. It was written by Stephenie Meyer and published in September of 2006 (paperback edition). I picked this book because everyone was reading it and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about over Edward and Bella. I was also bored one day over the school year last year and decided I wanted a book to read so I chose Twilight. Another reason why I decided to pick up this book was all my friends were telling me it was a great love vampire story and I just had to read it.This novel is about teenage girl named Bella who falls in love with a vampire in Forks, Washington.

Twilight is a fictional story about a girl named Bella Swan who moves to a rainy, small cold town called Forks in Washington. When she starts her first day of school, she didn't expect to fall in love with the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen. Bella soon comes to realize she's falling in love him. They have some problems between themselves but the bigger problem is when unexpected visitors come to town they realize the Cullens have a human with them. I would recommend this book to any teenage girl who loves romantic love vampire story. Its definitely a book you cannot put down once you started reading it. I basically love all kind of books whether its fiction, nonfiction romance, mystery etc.

Electric Kool-aid Acid Test

Over the summer Sara White recommended a book to me called "Electric Kool-aid Acid test". It is about Hippies who are on Acid and cross the country in a school bus. This book really didn't have a main point to it rather then a bunch of little events going on.
This book was heavily influenced by the Grateful dead scene that was crossing the country. It really opened my eyes on the beliefs and culter of the hippies and the American Counter culter. Many people in this book where very indepent.

lord of the flies

The last book that I read was the lord of the flies. I did not pick this book it was a book picked by ms.Croft we all read this book in the class. the main plot of the book was without rules there is chaos. the author of this book was written by William Golding. Lord of the flies was written in 1954.

Yes I would recomend this book to people that like chaos and destruction. This book is about two groups of kids geting stranded on an island with no adults to enforce the rules.

If I had to chooes a type of novels I would chooes action, excitment, huntingand, fishing.

Eclipse

The last book I read was Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer in 2007. I picked this book because I had read the first two, which my sister recommend to me after she read them non-stop. In this book Isabella (Bella) Swan and her boyfriend Edward Cullen go threw many obstacles. Bella wants to be like Edward and his family. While Edward just wants her to live a full and happy life as a human. While being totally in love with Edward, Bella also finds she self trying not to fall in love with her best friend Jacob. While dealing with Edward and Jacob, Bella finds out that someone is out for some major revenge against her and Edward. With danger always right around the corner Bella is trying even harder to get Edward to change her, but he refuses to do so. Yes, I would recomed it to others. This is a book that most girls would love to read. It is all the romance and action that keeps people reading from beginging to end.

The types of novles that I am interested in would be: Romance, and Drama. I say these two becouse they both tie in together some how, so it is easy to find a good book that will have atleast one of them in it. I also like Mysteries, and SiFi. I like these two becouse some times you can't find a Romance or a Drama.

Kissed By An Angel

The last book I read was named Kissed By An Angel and it was written in 1995. The book, written by Elizabeth Chandler is about a girl named ivy who has a strong believe in angels that is until her boyfriend Tristan is killed in a car accident. She completely stops believing, that is until she realizes he is now her guardian angel. His pressence to her is so strong, she can feel the touch of his hand and even the beat of his heart.

What Ivy doesn't know is that she's in danger herself and Tristan is the only one that can save her from his killer, who is now after her. If Tristan rescues her his mission on earth is done, and he will have to leave her forever, even though he has finally reached her again. i would deffinately recommend this book to any teenage girl that likes suspenseful, mystery, love stories. it's one of my favorite books i've read because it mixes a couple different genres into one.

The Tenth Circle

The book that I just recently read over summer vacation is called The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult, written in 2006. Some other books written by Jodi Picoult are Mercy, The Pact and Change of Heart, along with a variety of others. The Tenth Circle is a novel about a girl named Trixie Stone, who is the victim of a date rape, but there are holes left in Trixie’s story, and when another crime occurs that may be linked to the rapist, it leaves the entire Stone family under suspicion.

I picked this book mainly because I had just read My Sister’s Keeper by her, and I was told that this was another good book by Jodi Picoult. I would most deffinately recommend this book to anyone who likes a good suspenseful book, and a book that will keep you turning the pages. I am mainly interested in suspenseful novels, and ones that have a lot of questions that need to be answered somewhere in the book. I find these types of books to keep my interested in them, and keep me turning the pages.

Flags of Our Fathers

The last book I read was Flags of Our Fathers written by James Bradley. It was published in May 2001. I decided to read this book because last year in history class I did a research project on Iwo Jima. Also I love history and reading about true life stories that have happened. Another reason why I decided to pick up this book is because a friend of mine is a Marine and recommend it to me. This story is a journey of the six men and there courage and honor they displayed.

Flags of Our Fathers is a true story about six Marines and there battle of Iwo Jima and the historical picture of the raising of the American Flag. This book retells day by day of the battle and how they had to run through gun fire and bombs on a beach where they were in the open. These six men then managed to get to the highest peak, and climbed through landscape of h… itself, they raised the flag. This heroic story gives almost every detail of what happened through this battle, and an epic point of view from a generation of war. This book shows the difference between truth and myth. I would recommend this book to everyone, its definitely a story that goes down in history. I am not a picky person and I am interested in any kind of novels.

Speak

Over the summer I read one book named "Speak" laurie Halse Anderson was the autor and it was recomended to me by a friend and it was a decent book. It was about this 15 year old girl in highschool and talked about her life and how highschool was like and no one really talked to her and she kept this secret about how she got raped by this boy but she finally tells everyone at the end. I didnt think I'd like it at first because it was about an immature girl but it wasnt as bad as I thought. I've never really read a book since 8th grade besides the books that Ms.Croft's room. this book actually wasnt that bad. =)I'm now reading "the vicious circle" by Mike Carey and it's reviews look like it's a great book. I like any book that has horror or mystery in it. In the book she was acting all these funny ways and the author didnt say what her problem was until almost the end which made the book very good.

The Final Warning

The last book i read was The Final Warning over the summer. The author of this book is James Patterson and it was published in March 2008. I picked this book because i love James patterson and how he write. The Final Warning is about Max who is a normal human that has one unusual talent, she can fly. She shairs this abilty with four other kids. The flock is asked by enviromental scientist to study global warming. Max thought that this would be an easy way to get the flock out of trouble and to stay out of reach from the arms of evil scientist. But even in the cold, harsh Antarctican, Max is a irresistible target in constant danger. Whoever controls her thoughts and powers could also controll the world. Any warning she gets might come to late.
I would recommend this book to anybody who likes books that keep you on the edge. The kind of novels i like are the ones that always make you feel like your in the book or want to be in the book. I don't like the books that seem to drag on. Books that are fun and exciting and you never want to put down is the best.

YEY!
Your first assignment of the year is to pick a novel (fiction is a requirement). When I pick a novel, it is usually for a few of the following reasons:

1. Someone has recommended it
2. It fits my interests
3. I have read another work by the author
4. A new movie comes out based on a book
5. It has been deemed a classic of literature, therefore demands attention.
